This unique bespoke 3 tier wedding cake is inspired by the day the groom proposed to his bride on a gondala in the romantic city of Venice.

3 tier sponge gondala wedding cake

Inspired by a Venice proposal

I was supplied with photographs of the bride and groom, flowers for the brides bouquet, colours and an idea of a gondala complete with the bride and groom to sit on top.

At first I sketched out a preliminary design that was 2 tiers for the bride and groom to approve. Eventually they changed it to 3 tiers as the wedding got bigger.

All the decoration was made in advance ready to be applied to the cakes which would be covered a few days before the actual wedding.

This gorgeous cake topper was made separately from the cake. I like to make it this way so it is detachable from the cake and can be kept as a keepsake of their special day.

When designing this topper, I focused on looking what a gondala really looks like in photographs, and in doing this I found out that if I created one true to an original it would be very large with very small people on it which wouldn’t work.

So this gondala is a stylised version to create impact and therefore characters that are a good size for the cake.

Making sure the figures and gondala are the correct size for the cake is important

‘Blue Moon’ roses, white roses, Lavender, Gypsophila and ‘Dusty Miller’ silver leaves (all in the brides bouquet) were hand made. The Lavender and Gypsophila were created using florists wire and was removed before the cake was cut.

The bottom tier comprised of an elaborate quilt effect on which the delicate flowers sat.

It was safer to take the cake and topper in separate boxes so it was assembled at Woodborough Hall, Nottingham ready for the evening reception.

Inspired by watching Downton Abbey and old episodes of Poirot I wanted to create a beautiful Art Deco style wedding cake. Each tier has it’s own distinct style, the top one takes it cue from 1930’s cinemas and other similar buildings, the second from flapper dress fabrics popular at the time.

The third tier takes it’s ideas from cabaret and jazz clubs and the lower tier depicts a wedding scene, complete with the happy couple, a Rolls Royce and the church on the hill.

All the fine details were hand cut out to create this unique cake.  The only bought cutter used on this cake was for the dainty pink flowers around the band.

I was called upon to create this bespoke and unique Wedding cake for a ‘Royal Marine Groom’ and a ‘Fitness Instructer Bride’. The overall design being the Groom maneuvering over an obstacle course to reach and marry his bride.

The Marine has just got over the handmade tyres, he is then climbing the wall up the hand holds and has yet to pull himself up the rope to deliver the Wedding ring.

The Bride is exercising on the top with her veil, made from edible lace, flowing down and around the cake with her bouquet of pink flowers waiting for her husband to be.

Testamonial:
Ha ha, everybody was highly amused by Greg clambering up the cake with the ring to get to Charlotte on the top doing her workout.  Greg said it was ‘hoofin’ which in grown up speak means absolutely fabulous and Charlotte loved it.  So it hit the spot and tasted pretty good to.  Can recommend the carrot cake as a nice change.

Great big thank you xxx

I’ve been experimenting with a new kind of edible lace and I had an idea that it would make a beautiful veil for a bride figure on a wedding cake. This cake was to show what might be possible with it.

I thought the bride and groom figures would look delightful sat on a kissing seat on top of the cake with bridesmaids sat around the cake dangling their tiny feet off the edge to add a little colour.

I loved dressing the bride with her full length dress and lace veil and the bridegroom is resplendant in his top hat and tails.

The brides veil was made in edible lace and cascades down the cake and behind the cute little bridesmaids.
