This cake was designed around a Play Station hand console for a boy who loves playing all varieties of computer games that are available in todays world of new technology and gadgetry.

Square vanilla sponge birthday cake with gaming hand consule, red and black stripes on orange and birthday wishes

Hand Made Modelling Paste Hand Console Cake

Firstly I don’t play computer games so I had to research what a hand console looked like. I basically printed a photo off the internet to the correct size and cut out a template of the shape. After rolling the black modelling paste to the desired height I used the template to cut out the main body of the console then proceeded to rub my fingers around the sharp edges to soften. Creating the handles was a different technique of rolling the modelling paste into a sausage, then reducing one end to a soft point and then cutting out the other end to fit the main body again using the template. This was finished by hand painting all the symbols in edible food colouring.

The square sponge cake is covered in pale orange sugarpaste on which the console sits. Finished off with royal icing piped birthday wishes and black and red stripes to create a striking cake.

Well it’s nearly that time of year again…time to get ready for the big day and organise all the food, puddings and Christmas cakes a few weeks in advance for the big parties. I just had to make these cute little snowmen throwing snowballs at each other, having fun at Yuletide and perched on top of some yummy mini fruit cakes.

These unique hand-made snowmen have their hats and scarves hand-painted in edible gold to match their gold buttons and the gold snowflakes. They will look great on any festive table.

Well this is the final ‘Painting on Icing’ out of the trio (for the moment). Another one I will hopefully get around to creating a cake for from my designs…the list is getting longer.

Another inspired design from some wallpaper I bought. This was not traced but painted straight on the sugarpaste so the design is only influenced by the wallpaper. Each flower was painted with 2 coates to get the thick colour and the red ones were then painted in edible varnish (which doesn’t show on screen).

The leaves on the wallpaper were totally the wrong shape for poppy leaves so I changed that too.

This would look good and be very effective on a wedding or celebration cake with 3D petal paste poppies on top to finish off.

This fantastic cake was designed for an avid Welsh Rugby Fan for his 80th Birthday party. The cake was a conglomerate of the Welsh flag, a rugby ball and some bright yellow daffodils.

First of all I moulded the rugby ball in my hands to get the correct shape and then added the stitching and other details. Next came the tricky flag; the red dragon was cut out by hand and attached to the flag which in turn was attached to the cake and finished of with an edible black pen to create the outlines.

To finish off this design was the cheerful handmade daffodils. For that extra special touch I added some cupcakes with rugby ball and daffodil detail. Some royal icing piping and the wording and voila a finished work of art.

The title says it all really – a cake following the ‘Keep Calm’ trend of the moment.

All these words were hand cut to match the birthday invite I designed. The small letters came out sharper than I imagined and the crown came out a treat finished with piped icing.

The final embelishments are the edible printed photos of the lady whose birthday cake it was for.

This design could be easily transfered to a wedding cake.

This 90th birthday cake was created for a man who used to be a captain of a Maersk tanker before he retired.

The Maersk tanker is in 3D relief so that it is deeper at the front than the back. The blue background makes the red tanker zing and stand out more.

This is a characterised version of Bas in his captains outfit that he wore everyday on this job.

The tanker has intricate piped detail to reflect the pipes and tanks on deck and the whole cake is finished off with a red and blue rope effect border.

I have used this cake design before for a Birthday celebration but this has been recreated, with a few additions,  for a couple of cake decorating demonstrations for the British Sugar Guild I have this year.

This time I have tried to keep all the vegetables and fruit the correct size in relation to each other. Strawberries, tomatoes and grapes have been added this time. I have also modelled some peas in pods which are so tiny – the pods are only 10mm long this means you can work out how small the grapes are.

Everyone loves Christmas and its that time of year to start organising the festivities now so you can relax and enjoy the big day!

This cheeky chappie sits in relief on top of the sumptuous Christmas cake singing his heart out in the snow with his lantern beside him.

I was inspired by all the traditional colours and decorations of Christmas when I created this unique cake.

I was inspired by the wonderful shape and colour of the Poinsettia and thought this would make a very distinctive design.

This cake is decorated in traditional Christmas colours – red, green and gold and all of it is deliciously edible.

After spending around 40 hours on my competition piece for the British Sugarcraft Guild International Exhibition this weekend, I have achieved a ‘Silver Award’ for my ‘Night At The Theatre’ cake in the section for 1st time entrants.

I created a hand sculptured montage on the Phantom of the Opera, Romeo and Juliet and ballet dancers for the show piece on top.

Dazzling colours of red, turquoise, black and gold emphasised the dramatic scenes on this cake. The vibrancy and contrast of these colours mirrored a theatres elaborate decoration where the acts are played out on stage.

The side of this extravagent cake is filled with an entranced audience watching the actors perform. The whole cake is then set aglow with gold paint all over to capture the richness and atmosphere of the old theatres.

For my ‘Silver Award’ I received a certificate and I am thrilled to bits.
